  • Unlimited CEUs Job Summary Functions as a peri-operative registered nurse who works in collaboration with the surgeon and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes through application of the advanced knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the expanded role of RNFA. First assisting behaviors are further refinements of peri-operative nursing practice and are executed within the context of the nursing process. These behaviors include certain delegated medical functions that can be assumed by the RN who is qualified to practice as an RNFA.Job Duties
    • Assists circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the patient to include but not limited to: Foley catheter placement, tourniquet application, placement of intravenous catheters, cricoid pressure application and other procedures as needed.
    • Intraoperative - The RNFA performs specific tasks according to individual surgeon preference utilizing appropriate techniques including, but not limited to: incision and layered closure of surgical sites, providing exposure, achieving hemostasis by means of injection, manual, and topical methods and application of appropriate energy sources, manipulation and dissection/removal of tissues, aides in implanting, securing and/or removal of devices and drains and applying appropriate dressing material specific to procedure.
    • Postoperative - The RNFA applies any other specific dressing material such as splints or casts, assesses skin integrity, assists in transfer of the patient and follows the patient to recovery if needed or directed by surgeon.
    • Specialty Procedures - The RNFA who has appropriate training also performs, under surgeon supervision, other procedures including but not limited to: vein and graft harvesting and graft and implant preparation.
    • Applies theoretical knowledge of asepsis, wound healing, infectious diseases process, surgical anatomy and physiology, safety issues and operative techniques for surgical procedures on which he/she assists. Education:
      • Graduate of an accredited school for professional nursing. BSN or MSN or Certification of specialty preferred.
      • Completion of an RNFA program that is equivalent to one academic year of formal, post-basic nursing study and meets the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) standards for RN first assistant education programs. Licensure/Certification:
        • RN Indiana license.
        • Certification in peri-operative nursing (CNOR).
        • RNFA Certification within 2 years of completion of RNFA program or 2 years of notification of those currently practicing as an RNFA.Experience: Minimum two years' experience as an RN in Surgery.
