A Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) plays a crucial role in a dental practice by providing preventive dental care and educating patients on oral health.

Position: Registered Dental Hygienist

Job Summary: A Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) is responsible for delivering high-quality dental hygiene care to patients, performing dental cleanings, and assisting in preventive dental procedures. The RDH also educates patients on proper oral hygiene and collaborates with the dental team to ensure the overall health and well-being of patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Assessment:
  • Conduct thorough oral health assessments, including medical history, dental charting, and oral examinations.
  • Use diagnostic tools like X-rays and periodontal probing to identify dental issues.
  • Dental Cleanings:
    • Perform dental cleanings, including scaling, root planing, and prophylaxis to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from teeth.
    • Apply fluoride and sealants for cavity prevention.
    • Periodontal Care:
      • Assess and treat patients with gum disease through non-surgical therapies and maintenance.
      • Educate patients on the importance of gum health and proper home care.
      • Patient Education:
        • Provide personalized oral hygiene instructions and diet counseling to help patients maintain good oral health.
        • Explain the importance of regular check-ups and preventive care.
        • Preventive Procedures:
          • Administer local anesthesia and place dental restorations as permitted by state regulations.
          • Assist in the application of antimicrobial agents and other preventive treatments.
          • Radiography:
            • Take and interpret dental X-rays to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning.
            • Infection Control:
              • Strictly adhere to infection control protocols to ensure patient and staff safety.
              • Maintain sterilization and disinfection of dental instruments and equipment.
              • Record Keeping:
                • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including treatment plans and progress notes.
                • Collaboration:
                  • Collaborate with dentists and other dental professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients.
                  • Discuss treatment plans and patient progress with the dental team.
                  • Continuing Education:
                    • Stay current with the latest advancements in dental hygiene through ongoing education and professional development.
                      Dental Hygienist Qualifications:
                      • Valid Dental Hygienist License
                      • Maintain up to date trainings as required by law.
                      • Certification for other duties as required by the state practice act. Working Conditions:
                        • Work in dental offices, clinics, or hospitals.
                        • Frequent interaction with patients and dental team members.
